THE COMPLETE SENIOR SESSION PACKING CHECKLIST

August 05, 2021  •  Leave a Comment

Senior photos were one of the things I looked forward to the most about my own senior year.  Out of everything that happened, it was one of those events that finally made graduation feel "real".  And the buzz of excitement around picking outfits, hair, makeup, or even polishing up a nice car to add to the photo made it all the more fun.

As a senior photographer, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is:  "What should I bring to my session?"

I want you to feel absolutely prepared for the day of your shoot!  The checklist below should cover everything you need to bring to your session whether you've booked a quick 30 minute session or a complete senior session experience.  After all, our goal is to make your shoot to be as stress free and fun as possible!

I always recommend packing what you need the night before and get a good night's sleep so that you can show up and just enjoy your session!  This alleviates the stress of trying to find everything as you're rushing off to your hair and makeup appointment.  A big tote and garment bag will be your best bet when packing for your special day.

What to Bring to Your Senior Photo Session

1)  Your cap and gown AND graduation "bling".  I recommend steaming your gown and stole before your session.  No need to get all fancy and take it to the dry cleaners.  Just use a handheld steamer to smooth everything out.  We want your pictures to be as crisp as possible.  And, don't forget all your other cords and class ring (aka bling)!  You worked so hard for that hardware.  Let's show it all off!

2)  An extra outfit/change of clothes.  If you have planned for a session that lasts more than 30 minutes, you'll likely be doing an outfit change.  Make sure to neatly pack that change of clothes (or use the garment bag!) and attach any coordinating jewelry or accessories so that everything is together and no one is scrambling to look for that glamorous necklace for that gorgeous dress.

3)  Comfortable shoes and a water bottle.  These sessions almost always utilize multiple locations.  As a result, we can do a lot of walking.  Save your feet and make sure to bring some sandals or slip on shoes.  You'll feel SO much better walking between photo spots knowing you're not walking in heels or creating blisters on your feet.  Trust us.  Also, make sure to toss a water bottle in your bag to keep hydrated especially on the hot days.

4)  Basic touch-up kit and mirror.  You don't need your full makeup case.  After years of photographing seniors, we find there isn't a lot of time to touch up everything.  So, just stick with the basics.  I recommend including :  blotting sheets, powder, lip color/gloss, travel size hairspray, and tissues/disposable wipes.  Helpful hint - baby wipes are a nice way to cool your face off on a hot day but make sure to use setting spray on your makeup to keep that flawless look as long as possible!

5)  Friends, family members, or loved ones!  Everyone is so excited on photo day, and we just love it!  I highly recommend bringing a loved one to your senior shoot so that you feel more relaxed that day.  They'll help you smile, laugh, and just plain be yourself.  Those expressions, quite frankly, make the pictures you will love the most.

A Few Extra Things for Your Senior Shoot...

If you're in for a longer session or just want to feel extra prepared (we feel ya!), then here are a few other things I recommend:

1)  Props.  Although props are not necessary for your photos, we love the idea of incorporating things that are special to you or inserting some creativity in your photo shoot.  Some ideas include:  your instrument, your sports gear, books, your favorite sunglasses, or whatever is important to you.  It is super important for us to make this meaningful for you.

2)  Lint roller.  If you plan to wear any dark or solid colored clothing, then stash a lint roller in your bag since it seems that all lint or hair have a way of saying "hey, let's all get on this shirt!".

3)  Small towel.  This one sounds a little weird, right?  But, lots of seniors like the idea of hopping into a fountain or scenic stream during their session.  If you end up doing something similar, toss a small towel in your bag for a quick dry off.

The most important part of your senior shoot is that you feel like yourself!  Do what feels natural for you and just have fun.  You'll enjoy your special day and be so much happier with the final result if you do things that showcase you!

We look forward to booking your custom session and making this year absolutely memorable!
