Christmas is our favorite - and most busy - time of the year.  One of our favorite things is to take annual pet photos.  We spend lots of energy wrangling lots of pets for that perfect Christmas photo.  The end result is nothing short of an "awwwwwe" moment even though we end the day covered in pet hair and exhausted but having had the time of our lives with all of those sweet faces. Our own fur babies also love this too since they get lots of pets from passerby's and the chance to talk to Santa personally!

As we reflect back on the year, we are so incredibly thankful for all of you that have entrusted us with your photography needs.

May your 2022 be richly blessed!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2021/8/the-complete-senior-photos-packing-checklist THE COMPLETE SENIOR SESSION PACKING CHECKLIST

Senior photos were one of the things I looked forward to the most about my own senior year.  Out of everything that happened, it was one of those events that finally made graduation feel "real".  And the buzz of excitement around picking outfits, hair, makeup, or even polishing up a nice car to add to the photo made it all the more fun.

As a senior photographer, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is:  "What should I bring to my session?"

I want you to feel absolutely prepared for the day of your shoot!  The checklist below should cover everything you need to bring to your session whether you've booked a quick 30 minute session or a complete senior session experience.  After all, our goal is to make your shoot to be as stress free and fun as possible!

I always recommend packing what you need the night before and get a good night's sleep so that you can show up and just enjoy your session!  This alleviates the stress of trying to find everything as you're rushing off to your hair and makeup appointment.  A big tote and garment bag will be your best bet when packing for your special day.

What to Bring to Your Senior Photo Session

1)  Your cap and gown AND graduation "bling".  I recommend steaming your gown and stole before your session.  No need to get all fancy and take it to the dry cleaners.  Just use a handheld steamer to smooth everything out.  We want your pictures to be as crisp as possible.  And, don't forget all your other cords and class ring (aka bling)!  You worked so hard for that hardware.  Let's show it all off!

2)  An extra outfit/change of clothes.  If you have planned for a session that lasts more than 30 minutes, you'll likely be doing an outfit change.  Make sure to neatly pack that change of clothes (or use the garment bag!) and attach any coordinating jewelry or accessories so that everything is together and no one is scrambling to look for that glamorous necklace for that gorgeous dress.

3)  Comfortable shoes and a water bottle.  These sessions almost always utilize multiple locations.  As a result, we can do a lot of walking.  Save your feet and make sure to bring some sandals or slip on shoes.  You'll feel SO much better walking between photo spots knowing you're not walking in heels or creating blisters on your feet.  Trust us.  Also, make sure to toss a water bottle in your bag to keep hydrated especially on the hot days.

4)  Basic touch-up kit and mirror.  You don't need your full makeup case.  After years of photographing seniors, we find there isn't a lot of time to touch up everything.  So, just stick with the basics.  I recommend including :  blotting sheets, powder, lip color/gloss, travel size hairspray, and tissues/disposable wipes.  Helpful hint - baby wipes are a nice way to cool your face off on a hot day but make sure to use setting spray on your makeup to keep that flawless look as long as possible!

5)  Friends, family members, or loved ones!  Everyone is so excited on photo day, and we just love it!  I highly recommend bringing a loved one to your senior shoot so that you feel more relaxed that day.  They'll help you smile, laugh, and just plain be yourself.  Those expressions, quite frankly, make the pictures you will love the most.

A Few Extra Things for Your Senior Shoot...

If you're in for a longer session or just want to feel extra prepared (we feel ya!), then here are a few other things I recommend:

1)  Props.  Although props are not necessary for your photos, we love the idea of incorporating things that are special to you or inserting some creativity in your photo shoot.  Some ideas include:  your instrument, your sports gear, books, your favorite sunglasses, or whatever is important to you.  It is super important for us to make this meaningful for you.

2)  Lint roller.  If you plan to wear any dark or solid colored clothing, then stash a lint roller in your bag since it seems that all lint or hair have a way of saying "hey, let's all get on this shirt!".

3)  Small towel.  This one sounds a little weird, right?  But, lots of seniors like the idea of hopping into a fountain or scenic stream during their session.  If you end up doing something similar, toss a small towel in your bag for a quick dry off.

The most important part of your senior shoot is that you feel like yourself!  Do what feels natural for you and just have fun.  You'll enjoy your special day and be so much happier with the final result if you do things that showcase you!

We look forward to booking your custom session and making this year absolutely memorable!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2020/3/-ive-got-an-appointment-now-i-m-worried-about-what-to-do "I'VE GOT AN APPOINTMENT. NOW, I'M WORRIED ABOUT WHAT TO DO."

“I’ve got an appointment.  Now, I’m worried about what to do.”

We get it.  As a momma, I’m right there with you.  So, I wanted to take a moment to address some FAQ’s for you guys as a proactive way to keep you informed.

First and foremost, our client’s health is so incredibly important to us.  We always personally take extra precautions at our sessions as we are a family that has to remain mindful of compromised immune systems within our own family.  So, we always have to make sure we keep this top of mind with all that we do as we interact with our clients.  95% of our sessions are outdoors, so studio cross contamination isn’t as much as an issue for us.  In fact, we have temporarily postponed the plans, we had in the works for studio sessions, in consideration of current events.  We also make sure that any props that are used across sessions are completely sanitized between clients.

What happens if you’re still not comfortable coming out right now, or simply cannot because of the circumstances at your home?  As mentioned above, we are super sensitive to that.  So, during this time, we are happy to reschedule your session for a later date and will suspend notification period requirements for making a date change.  This exception will be in place through the end of March and then re-assessed again at that time.

What about your session meeting appointment where we were going to meet face to face to review session details?  No problem!  We are happy to FaceTime you or Skype to do an online meeting.  Or, we can simply discuss over the phone.

Where do we go from here?  We will continue to monitor the situation.  And, since our sessions are outdoors then we will continue to take your sessions for business as usual.  We will avoid mini session situations – where clients are booked back to back – until the end of March.

And, as always, please feel free to contact us if you have more specific questions to be addressed.

-Jennifer

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/1/senior-session-booking-hints SENIOR SESSION BOOKING HINTS!

Now that we've crossed into January, seniors across the state unite in their collective joy at the thought of finally making it to May.  Soon there will be no more waking up early, no more homework, no more tests.  FINALLY they will be an.....ADULT!  Moms will get a kick out of that last statement.  Although the teens are super anxious to make it to May, moms and dads want to savor every single minute of this year.  And, it goes by way too fast.  As their "babies" are already trying to pack bags for college, parents are saying "wait, wait, wait - slow down please".  As a mom that has gone through this myself already and about to do it again in 2020, I know all too well just how much your emotions can be all over the place.  We are sad that this season of life is winding down but super excited at the season coming.  Where will they go?  Not too far we hope.  So, why worry about senior pictures in January?

One of the most anticipated activities at this stage of life is getting senior pictures done.  It's a big milestone!  Some want to be glamorous, some want to show their unique personality, some want a more low key experience because they are just cool like that.

Why think about this in January?  Here are a few helpful hints for why you should be putting pencil to calendar now:

1)  EVERYONE IS DOING THE SAME!  January/early February is a very popular time for LOTS of people to look at calendars to pre-book their session.  They know there is only a limited window of a couple of months left to get this on the calendar before it turns into frantic time.  A couple of months doesn't sound too bad, right?  Don't forget that prom is tucked into this timeframe also which can dominate time for dress/tux shopping.  Those weekends start to fill up very quickly.  The last thing you want to do is wait too long and have to settle, scramble, or be stressed.  The early birds get the worms, right?

2)  PLANNING AHEAD MAKES IT EASIER!  If you plan now for your Spring session, you have time to work out important details like reserving a special venue, getting those special outfits, and gathering those special items you want to include in your shoot.  There is nothing more disappointing than to find out that you can't reserve that space and then just trying to figure out anything you can do to just get in anywhere to meet deadlines.  When you reach this mode, you are already going in with a level of disappointment which means you'll look back at your pictures and say "I wish we would have..." or "I love the pictures, but I wish we had gotten in to the...instead".  Photographers across the state are applauding your proactive self since we often get indirectly linked to that disappointment because the pictures were not where you really wanted to go.

3)  YOU GET YOUR FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHER!  If lots of people are looking at reserving a session date, you actually may not get in with your photographer.  Wait, what?!  How could they do that to me!  Calendars fill up quickly, as these sessions tend to be a bit longer in length, so remember that photographers only have so much time available for these special sessions.  And photographers already know that Aunt Sadie has assured you several times over Christmas dinner that she can do that for you because she has a camera and can do it for free.  We get it - she would love to help and you love her for it.  But odds are pretty high that Aunt Sadie hasn't had many hours of training and experience to give you the pictures that make you tear up and whisper "wow" as soon as you open that gallery.  This whole process is a very important deal.  Now maybe isn't really the best time to pin your long awaited anticipation of this moment on that.  Sorry Aunt Sadie.  Have her head up the graduation party instead if she wants to help.  She can snap candid pictures to her heart's content at that or even the ceremony itself.  Win/win!

4)  YOU GET YOUR PICTURES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS BACK IN TIME!  Getting a gallery of pictures means you have several to choose from when it's time to print things.  And, if you haven't done something like that, it can be hard to choose.  I mean, it's your sweet faced baby looking back at you in them all.  How can you pick just some of them to put on their announcement?!  Almost seems cruel, doesn't it?  But, realistically, you won't want 25 different poses on that announcement card.  Plus, you and everyone other client that your photographer is working with will have things to be ordered.  And, there is a certain turnaround time to get those back and delivered back to you.  If you book a little earlier, you can spend a time making sure you've picked just what you wanted.  You also get it ordered timely to avoid pulling into the post office on two wheels desperately hoping the announcements make it out in time.

5)  IT IS NOT AS EXPENSIVE AS YOU THINK!  Did you know that we only require a $50 deposit to hold your session date?  It's true!  If you reserve now, you have time to budget and plan accordingly for paying by the session date.  This helps with spacing costs out so that everything from the year doesn't hit all at once.  We also offer packages starting at $99 because we know first hand just how expensive this year really is.  We offer different session lengths - starting at 30 minutes - to best suit your schedule and budget.  Ask us for more info!

So while you're enjoying that cup of coffee on this cold morning, grab your calendar and start planning now.  The more planning that happens early, the more you can relax and enjoy each moment of this year with as little stress as possible.  And, don't worry.  We will take great care of you and your senior at your session because we pour ourselves into making it a memorable and exciting experience!  We'd love to share the moment with you!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2019/1/its-winter-what-is-that-lady-doing IT'S WINTER.....WHAT IS THAT LADY DOING?!

Now that the holidays are over and the weather is cold, outdoor photographers everywhere unite in being happy to curl up under a blanket, nursing sore backs and feet, and breathing a sigh of relief for making it through the crazy holiday rush.  For me, it's also looking around at all the photography things tucked into every spare corner of the house wondering what we are going to do with it all.  My husband wonders the same (oopsie).  Any storage experts out there?  PLEASE call me.  When I say there is glitter everywhere (from Christmas), trust me.  IT'S EVERYWHERE.  We spent countless hours packing and unpacking the truck for each session and many hours on the road back and forth.  So, glitter spilling into almost every facet of our life was bound to happen.  We would brush each other off before walking into church as we noticed the disco ball look we were sporting on our clothes.  Yes, I tried vacuuming the truck out but it was futile people.  So, I just giggled and said "hey, Jesus loves your enthusiasm today".  We also came down to the absolute wire with balancing client sessions and our own family activities for the holidays.  But, I loved every single minute of the mayhem.  I also may (or may not) have bought an entire supply of pain reliever for the sore muscles that always follow this time of year.  So when January comes, we welcome the pace and the chance to recharge a bit.  Christmas was peaceful and fulfilling at our house.

Now that it's cold, everyone is rebounding from all the Christmas purchases, and things slow down in general in the photography world - what are we doing with our time?

1)  Training seminars.  Sounds absolutely exciting!!  Ok, maybe just to me.  Anyone that knows me, knows I'm a giant nerd.  I LOVE learning every detail of how something works and takeaways for making things better.  So, I spend many winter hours attending seminars, webinars, and training classes honing current skills, learning the newest techniques, and trends in the market.  You are paying for a service.  You don't want to pay for the "bear with me, I'm learning as I go" method, right?  It's our JOB to do this so that we provide the best services possible.

2)  We are planning for the ENTIRE year.  We have our calendar purchased - for the next year - WAY before most normal people.  I get mine as soon as the printers release it and am making copious notes in it.  January is when I focus most on nailing down dates for the whole year and planning accordingly.  We are projecting timelines and dates for seasonal sessions for the year to ensure that you've gotten your pictures back in a timely fashion.  I mean, who wants their Christmas pictures in January?  Didn't think so.  So, we strive to make the most effective use of our time so that your purchase was the best experience we could provide.  Everyone is always very excited to take the pictures and even more excited to see them!  Now hurry up camera lady!!

3)  We evaluate.  As mentioned, I make detailed notes of everything session related throughout the year.  Why?  It helps us assess several things to improve our services for the coming year.  What worked?  What didn't?  What could we have done better?  What should stay exactly the same?  How do we keep glitter off the dog and out of Mitch's hair?  Seriously, call me.  This helps us remember things while "in the moment" so that when we sit down in January to evaluate the coming year, we are not struggling to remember things.  It's our job to improve for you!

4)  We look at product offerings.  We are constantly evaluating our vendors to ensure you are receiving optimum professional level products.  We treat it as though our reputation depends on it.  Because...it does.  We periodically spot order products throughout the year to see what you're seeing when you order products from us.  Since the product is often shipped directly to our client out of convenience and speed of delivery, we often don't get the opportunity to see what you see when you open the box.  So we also order those same things, at various times, to do random reviews of the products you are receiving.  These products are then utilized as demo products we showcase at trade shows or present to customers as samples when taking orders.  Also mostly because you were pretty great looking, and we want to show you off.

5)  WE COUNT OUR BLESSINGS!  When January comes, it is a time of reflection.  We have so many wonderful clients who bless us by coming into our lives.  We do our absolute best to offer a portion of that blessing right back by providing captured memories.  Our goal is to get to know you on a personal level so that you feel like you're family.  Because to us, YOU ARE.  Everyone that comes to see us is our top priority for the day and will know that from beginning to end of the session process.  You chose us, and we are SO thankful for that.

As we look forward to 2019, we are so excited at what the future holds for our little dream.  You guys have made Southern Roots what it is today.  And, we are so grateful.  It is truly an honor to be chosen to work with you.  Our mission is to give you a wonderful memory.  Read our story.  You will see why.  Live in the moments as they happen.  God bless you all in 2019!!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/12/christmas-gift-ideas CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS!

Much like us, I'm sure you've been racing against the clock to get everything done before Christmas.  So, I can appreciate you taking a second to read this blog and promise to keep it brief so that you can get to the mall!

Here are a few Christmas gift ideas we can help with!  You're doing lots already, so leave this part up to us.  After all, it's what we're here for!

1)  PRINTS - Ok, this one is really a given (and the most popular photography purchase).  But in these days of technology, the art of getting an actual print can often be lost.  Grab a print of the grandkids for grandma or a special family portrait for yourself.  Get a nice frame, and viola!  A tangible gift to treasure!  Price?  Depends on the size, but photos start as low as $5!

2)  CANVASES - This one is special.  Why?  Because it can be considered a piece of art.  Get a thicker dimension to use as a stand alone piece.  Or, consider a thinner dimension to add a wide frame to so that it really stands out as a prized piece.  After all, it's your family portrait!

3)  METAL PRINTS - This is great for those that like a sturdy unique piece and want to simply place it in a photo stand.  Have an industrial style in your home?  This style is perfect!

4)  PLAYING CARDS - Ever seen these?  What a fun present to give to those that enjoy a good game of cards.  And, chose your favorite picture to add a custom flair to this fun deck of cards!  The price for these custom cards are only $20!

5)  METAL ORNAMENTS - These are quite popular also.  Let us make a special ornament for that special person.  What a treasure to put on the tree year after year!  For only $15, we can create one for you with several shapes to choose from!

6)  FLASHLIGHT KEYCHAIN - Looking for a great stocking stuffer?  This is perfect!  What a handy piece that will get used over and over!

7)  GIFT CERTIFICATE - Last, but certainly not least, is a gift certificate.  Have someone on your list that you want to surprise with a session?  Grab a gift certificate from us to purchase the session now and let them set the date at their convenience.  We provide a heavy card stock certificate with envelope for presentation.

Some quick FAQ's for you:

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/10/what-to-expect-at-your-session WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR SESSION

Picture time should be special and not overwhelming!  For some, hiring a photographer can be a little daunting.  You want those perfect images.  Who should you choose?  When is the optimum time to take pictures?  Will my kids (or husband, wink wink) even cooperate?  The process of taking pictures should be filled with amazing experiences and one that is easy and enjoyable.  Let us help dispel some myths and reveal the backstage of what to expect when you book your session.

1)  WE ARE FUN!  Anyone that has worked with us will tell you...we are fun!  No guys, I do not personally wear that traditional beret and fancy silk scarf nor heave big "artist sighs" when things are not going perfectly.  I believe that when you hire a photographer, it should be with someone who you connect with and feel comfortable with.  Someone that is there for you and can easily shift gears and redirect when necessary.  This is truly the secret to a successful session.  If you are on edge or uncomfortable with the person directing your shoot, your kiddos will pick up on the mood also and likely project it in the session.  We've done lots of sessions with kids, trust us.  And let's face it, if you had to promise the hubby a hunting or fishing trip if he came along without incident, he may do a complete 360 if your chosen photographer does not mesh with your family's style.  We strive to make sure your session is relaxed yet well orchestrated.  As a busy parent myself, I try to ensure that your session is as efficient as possible so that you can get back to your busy schedule.

2)  WE ARE A MIXTURE OF TRADITIONAL AND LIFESTYLE POSING.  I completely understand the importance of traditional poses and love to incorporate those.  But, I also love to incorporate those natural moments - in between - when a family is really connecting.  And, that happens when you are just plain relaxed!  Quite frankly, I believe the best images are the ones that come naturally.  So, we begin with getting everyone relaxed and the photo session jitters out.  Then, we spend time lining up everyone for the traditional shots but then also including prompts to encourage those natural interactions.  Trust us, you will look wonderful.  Like, Christmas card wonderful.

3)  WHAT DO WE WEAR?  Oh boy.  This is one of the top questions we get!  And, we have plenty of Pinterest Inspiration Boards to help.  My favorite advice is to please make it easy on momma.  She's got a lot on her plate already getting this all organized!  Wear coordinating colors and not necessarily the same outfits (unless you are a mom wizard and found all the sizes you needed for all the kiddos).  It makes it so much easier to pick colors to work around that rather than making sure everyone gets the same shirt but in five different sizes.  Also, consider the location and type of shoot.  Are you doing a Fall session in the park?  Then, wear burgundy's or deep yellow tones.  Now is not the time to break out that hot pink jumpsuit (sorry guys).  Side Tip - A popular trend is for everyone to wear white shirts.  BUT, wearing white shirts tends to wash faces out as the color white projects up when photographed.

4)  WHEN DO WE BOOK?  Our schedule runs approximately 3 - 4 weeks in advance.  We occasionally have last minute slots available, but please don't leave those important occasions to chance.  This time of year becomes extremely busy for us with Fall sessions being booked and those Christmas card sessions getting nailed down.  Our favorite time of day to shoot?  The "golden" hour which is near sunset and makes for superb soft lighting that everyone just loves.  But, we have tricks for those other rebels who want to shoot during the day - gasp.

5)  WHAT LOCATION SHOULD WE USE?  Sessions are at a location that you choose unless we are doing mini sessions at a designated location.  And quite frankly, our best advice is to not stress too much about a certain location with spectacular architecture but more so an interesting location with good lighting.  Primarily we do "on location" shoots that are typically outdoors.  And, angles can be your best friend when the Governor's Mansion is booked but you found an interesting brick wall downtown.  In fact, the picture above was taken on the side of an attorney's office!  The primary focus should be on the subjects and how to make them look their best.  Of course, we also do shoots indoors or at your home - i.e. newborn session -  and utilize beautiful natural light.  Is there a place that is meaningful for you and your family?  Do you like a city vibe?  Park or garden look?  Need ideas?  We have a list of suggestions to help!

Most importantly, we are here to help.  We can walk you through the process step by step.  We pride ourselves in keeping you informed along the way and treating your family as if you were our family.  You should not expect less when you hire a photographer.  We'd love the opportunity to meet you!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/9/five-exciting-things-about-me FIVE EXCITING THINGS ABOUT ME!

Who is the person behind Southern Roots?  Oh boy!  Here's my chance to tell you FIVE EXCITING THINGS ABOUT ME!

Much like everyone else, I love a good glimpse into someone's life.  It's why we watch reality TV, right?  So when considering what to blog about this week, I decided to tell you a little about me - the curly red headed lady behind the camera.  Hello, I'm Jennifer Plumlee.

1) I AM AN ACCOUNTANT BY TRADE.  Wow - now THERE's some excitement right?  Who doesn't love crunching numbers to maximize potential returns on investments or creating income statements?  Ok, ok - maybe just me.  My kids tell me this is truly what makes a nerd.  Thanks kids.  'Preciate that.  I've been told, over the years, that I'm not your "normal" accountant.  I am also a jokester who also loves to sing and who doesn't fit "the mold".  I'll take that unicorn status.

2)  I AM A MOMMA.  This, my friends, is my biggest accomplishment.  Mitch and I have two kids (plus one adorable furry one - Scarlett - that barks a lot when she doesn't get her way).  Hope is 22 and Logan is 16.  They are precious (as any good Southern momma would say).  Especially when they DON'T want to get their pictures done.  Let's face it.  Photographer children see WAY too much of the camera, so their little faces just melt when I gleefully say "let's go and take pictures - yesssss!".  Poor babies.  They like gas money, so they amuse me.  Bribery?  Maybe.  Scarlett doesn't mind it though.  In fact, she sits and stares painfully close while I edit sessions.

3)  I AM A COFFEE LOVER.  Starbucks may want to buy stock in me - their BFF - in return for the number of times I've sat in a long line to get that heavenly white mocha.  I am also the first in line when pumpkin spice latte season hits or white peppermint mocha time rolls around.  I am also a master at convincing people not to go to "too much trouble" when asking what to get me for a birthday present.  Spare yourself the trip to the store and just get me a gift card.  I promise - I won't judge.  Mostly because I can add it to my Starbucks points and perpetuate my habit.

4)  WE ARE A SPORTS FAMILY.  We have been one for YEARS.  Friday Night Football is our main focus these days.  But over the span of Hope and Logan's childhood, it has also included baseball, basketball, and softball.  I'm a loud cheerer.  I can't help it.  I'm competitive by nature, love the game, and rooting my babies on.  Logan, however, doesn't really appreciate the waves from the stands these days (unlike when he was five).  So, I've tried to tone those down - per his request - and can only wave when no one is looking.  Even then, it can be only slight movements - as to not draw attention.  I can actually see him try to stealthily look sideways up into the stands to spot his momma.  I like to tell myself it's because he needs me and wants to see where I'm sitting (50 yard line of course!).  Mitch says "no comment" when I tell him my thoughts on it.  All jokes aside, I'm super proud of my kiddos.  We love being on the go and will travel anywhere to watch them.  After all, we are TEAM PLUMLEE baby!

5)  I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY.  This one is a given right?  My early photography days were spent photographing my kids at sporting events.  I would get so frustrated that things were blurry, too dark in that gym to get good pictures, or too far down the field to capture with my tiny pink point and shoot camera (ah, the early years).  And admittedly, I was a little jealous of those traveling photographers that drove up with their giant cameras taking the best action shots of your kids that you'd ever seen in your life and then convincing us that they would burn them in some trash incinerator if we didn't buy them all.  Good news, Mitch.  I just spent $350 to spare every image of the baby from the trash.  You're welcome.  I became determined to learn all I could to get those shots myself because that traveling photographer only showed up occasionally (thank goodness, HA!) and took their photo voodoo powers with them.  And as many sports as my kids were involved in, I had plenty of time to perfect my craft.  I also managed to convince Mitch to let me upgrade my camera after many pleas to not miss the shots in the "baby's games that we would never get to do over".  Over the years, this then morphed into people asking me to take pictures of their families.  And now, I have the blessing of sharing my craft with clients.

I absolutely love photography.  I especially love meeting new people, making them laugh, and making their experience with me an easy and relaxed one.  I'm a mom, so I get just how important pictures are to fellow moms.  And, I know just how important it is to spend your dollars wisely and not on someone that makes it feel like you're not a priority or that they're too busy to make you feel like they're taking time to do it right.  I also really love the technical side of it - taking hours and hours of coursework to hone my craft and learning the latest editing techniques.  I think this is where my "nerd" gene is most useful.

Every once in a great while, I wish I was a go-zillionaire who lived in the tropics.  But, then reality sets in.  I love our little story.  I also love taking pictures to help others write their story.   How can I help you write your story?

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/9/our-little-town Our Little Town

We love our little town.  We've been in Redfield since my son Logan was born.  In fact, we were supposed to move out of our apartment and into our new house the day he was born!  I think he realized something was happening, and he wanted to make sure he was there to see it (albeit a month early).  So, our family chipped in and frantically moved us while we welcomed Logan into the world.  We didn't even have his crib ready.  What an eventful weekend that was!  That was 16 years ago.  Fast forward through the years as we've spent many hours at the Maverick football field behind the Junior High while my daughter - Hope - cheered and then later as Logan played for the team.  We volunteered MANY hours working concession, cleaning, serving on the Board, and donating to support our local team.  Now, that field is silent and we are only able to reminisce in echoes and memories.  We also spent many days in the blazing sun watching Logan play baseball for Redfield.  We've also cheered like crazy watching him play basketball for Redfield.  I "cut my teeth" on photography, many years ago, at these games.  I have LOTS of pictures to prove that.  And, then our proud parent time came when Hope and Logan - in turn - volunteered to coach basketball in Redfield.  Watching them try to herd 5 year old kids in the same direction at the same time would make us quietly giggle.  But, them giving back meant they understood the bigger picture.  Now that they are older and on to other activities, I've turned my own volunteer time into taking adoption photos at the Redfield Animal Shelter.  And yes, I've had to talk myself down MANY times from loading them all up and taking all of those sweet faced doggies home with me.  I'm a total softie for those who have been abandoned.  I mean, look at those eyes.

Ok, I digress.  But, this is a passion for me.

I also spend my time now chasing and photographing events in Redfield like the Color Run 5k or the beloved 4th of July parade.  We've never missed that one.  Who doesn't get chills when those leading parade sirens go off?  Or getting to see your favorite beauty queen or king?  My personal favorite is seeing everyone's cars - new and old - polished up and adorned for the event.  I try to make sure I capture everything for everyone to enjoy.

Why do it?  Because we love our little town.  We think everyone should give back any way that they can.  We don't have large corporate sponsors for our events.  We have each other.  And, let's face it.  That's what makes small towns great.  I was raised in the small town of Star City.  I wanted my kids to experience the same.

As I sit and enjoy my coffee on this cool rainy day, I felt compelled to say please live every moment to the fullest.  The kiddos don't stay little forever.  The field falls silent and you're left with only memories.

Take pictures.  TONS of pictures.  You'll drive them nuts, and they may roll their eyes now and then.  But, you'll thank yourself.  Trust me

You've booked your Senior session.  Then, a bit of panic sets in as you debate where to actually have them done.  You want it to be memorable.  So many choices can actually make it hard to actually make one.  We get it - we are meticulous planners also.  We love to help offer suggestions to help you choose!  Last week we shared our second set of location suggestions.  So this week, we will offer the final four of twelve suggestions to help spark ideas for one of the biggest milestones of your life!

9)  GRAB YOUR ATHLETIC GEAR!  Ok, this just might be one of our favorites.  Do you love being on the court or field?  We feel ya.  We love watching you!  Time to grab your football helmet, jersey, basketball shoes, or volleyball shorts!  Let's head to your turf!

10)  HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE!  Some of you are my kindred spirits who love a good cup of coffee.  We have some really cool local coffee shops and cafes that would be perfect for capturing senior portraits as they offer soft lighting and interesting walls.  Perfect laid back vibe!

11)  FIND GLAMOUR!  If elegance is your middle name, then let's plan a glamorous shoot!  Think Villa Marre, Marlsgate Plantation, Alda's Magnolia Hill, or the Capitol Hotel.  Take a step back in time to these gorgeous settings.  Time to channel your inner diva with your personal paparazzi in tow!

12)  USE A COLLEGE CAMPUS!  Let's face it, you cannot wait to get to your favorite college campus after you graduate.  Why not utilize areas of the campus in your shoot?  Most colleges have an array of interesting architecture, archways, and beautifully landscaped outdoor areas that are perfect for your photo session.

That wraps up a total of twelve suggestions for your senior photo shoot.  Which ones speak to you?  We'd love to talk to you about your vision and how we can make that an easy and amazing experience.  It's a special time, so let's make it memorable!

You've booked your Senior session.  Then, a bit of panic sets in as you debate where to actually have them done.  You want it to be memorable.  So many choices can actually make it hard to actually make one.  We get it - we are meticulous planners also.  We love to help offer suggestions to help you choose!  Last week we shared our first four location suggestions.  So this week, we will offer four more of twelve suggestions to help spark ideas for one of the biggest milestones of your life!

5)  ENJOY HISTORY!  Where are my fellow history buffs at?  I absolutely LOVE the architecture and wonderfully rich history those locations can have.  Think the Old Statehouse, State Capitol, or even Bathhouse Row!  These historic locations will leave you with some truly memorable senior portraits.

6)    A NEED FOR SPEED!  If muscle cars are more your thing, you're speaking our language.  Got a motorcycle?  Of course, that would be tons of fun also.  Wish you had a muscle car to use?  Good news, we can help with that!  Check out my Challenger that we used in a recent shoot!

7)  HEAD DOWNTOWN!  Take advantage of a unique downtown vibe.  The River Market, Bridges, City Hall, or Robinson Hall for starters.  Or do you have a great downtown or special area like the Square in Star City where the street lamps are unique, there is a gazebo, or jagged brick walls?  We'd love to meet you there!

8)  CURL UP WITH A BOOK!  If you are more of the simpler type and prefer a slower pace, then let's head to a library on a campus or even to your local library.  Or, why not head to your favorite bookstore and grab a cup of coffee and your favorite book?  What a relaxing idea!

Next time, we will have four more suggestions for your session.  Let's make the selection process easy and full of amazing experiences!

You've booked your Senior session.  Then, a bit of panic sets in as you debate where to actually have them done.  You want it to be memorable.  So many choices can actually make it hard to actually make one.  We get it - we are meticulous planners also.  We love to help offer suggestions to help you choose!  So this week, we will offer four of twelve suggestions to help spark ideas for one of the biggest milestones of your life!

1)  HEAD TO THE CITY.  If you are really looking to find some interesting shoot locations, why not head to Little Rock or Hot Springs?  Little Rock has some fantastic locations with great architecture downtown, lots of brick, beautiful parks, or even hidden gardens.  If you love the urban vibe, then Little Rock is perfect.  Hot Springs has some great locations as well - Bathhouse Row, the Grand Promenade, or even Oaklawn.

2)  FIND A GARDEN OR PARK.  If you prefer a beautiful backdrop of trees, flowers, or wide open spaces then Fun Senior Session Locations use a local park or botanical garden.  Find something with water - like the Park Lakes in Redfield or Regional Park in Pine Bluff.  Burns Park also has many hidden treasures around every corner.  Bernice Garden is a gorgeous spot tucked right in the middle of downtown Little Rock.  Garvin Garden, of course, is always a favorite because it is beautiful year round.

3)  ENJOY AN AMUSEMENT PARK.  Stay with me here.  I know there are adventurers out there.  Have you ever considered using the State Fair as your backdrop?  Neon lights?  Ferris Wheel?  There are so many bright colors and bold patterns to incorporate into your shoot.  It would be a unique session that sets you apart from the crowd.  What a great way to showcase just how unique you are!  The State Fair is in town October 11 - 21.  Plenty of time to plan ahead for that one of a kind session!

4)  TAKE A TRIP TO THE LAKE.  If you are lucky enough to live near one of Arkansas' gorgeous lakes, why not use the water and a boat as a backdrop for your session?  There are spectacular sunsets and the water is beautiful.  Don't live near a lake?  No worries, we know just where to go.  What a gorgeous backdrop that the sunset against the water would be!

Next time, we will have four more suggestions for your session.  Let's make the selection process easy and full of amazing experiences!

https://southernrootsphotography.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/8/common-senior-session-mistakes Common Senior Session Mistakes

We get asked lots of questions about Senior Sessions.  We know.  We've been there ourselves - tears and all.  So many things quickly happening in that precious fleeting Senior year.  So many important decisions to be made.  And, you just want everything to be perfectly memorable (and preferably in slow motion).  Your Senior photography session is one of those incredibly important milestones.  You do a double take because they suddenly look grown and ready for that next big adventure in their life.  Being able to capture such a pivotal moment is so incredibly important!  You want someone that you can trust with such a monumental occasion.  Someone that will listen and make sure you are their most important priority - not just the next checkbox in their busy schedule.  Someone that will create an experience with photos you will cherish long after your baby is gone from home.

So in this post, I'll give you five common tips to avoid with your session.

1)  Wearing the wrong outfit.  The wrong clothing can really make a big difference in your portraits.  We want you to be comfortable!  But, make sure that your clothing is fitted as it translates best in photos.  Bring multiple outfits - casual, dressy!  But, you'll want to stay away from bold patterns, luminous colors, and logos.  It's a special day!  Make momma happy and wear a special outfit!

2)  Cutting your hair just before your session.  Moms, we hear ya.  Now is not the time for drastic changes.  Your baby loves to keep you on your toes, right?  Well, maybe just mine.  Hair plays an important role in the overall look.  And, if they decide to try a new hairstyle right before their session, you could potentially end up with pictures you don't love.  Trims are great.  Just make sure to do that at least a week before your session.

3)  Rushing through your session.  As a fellow "boy mom", I can relate to the...ahem, challenges...of getting your child to agree to pictures.  Some may tell you that they don't want to stay long because they'd rather be somewhere else with their friends.  If you want to be happy with your senior photos, it's very important not to rush for the sake of finishing.  Agree on the package time and commit to making the most of it.  Your photographer is a professional that knows just what it takes for those "make you cry" photos.  Patience is key.  Trust us, it's totally worth it.

4)  Forcing a pose or a smile.  The more natural you are in front of the camera, the better your photos will look.  We pride ourselves in capturing natural emotion and relaxed looking photos.  No one wants a repeat of that terrible third grade school photo smile.  If you're feeling nervous or aren't sure how to pose, your photographer should be ready to guide you so that you get that senior picture you're hoping for.

5)  Choosing the wrong photographer.  You need to trust and feel comfortable around your photographer which is why it is very important to do your research.  Your senior budget dollars are too precious to be spent on someone that will not provide you with the highest level of client care - meaning someone who will rush you through your session to get to the next client or be too busy to get to your photos when promised.  You want to make sure they present a style that you will love and consistently demonstrate advanced technical skills for those high quality images.  Your grandmother was correct - you get what you pay for!  Don't settle or you just might get your photos back and wonder why things just look "off".  I believe that when you hire a photographer, it should be with someone you connect with, trust with your images, and in the time they promised.  Our goal is to make this an easy process for you.  You have enough to worry about.

Let us show you how the Southern Roots experience is above the rest.  Our prices are competitive, but our client experience is second to none.  Come and see the Southern Roots difference.
